Nietzsche loves a dance party: “Herojuana”

The second NoFx song in my NLADP series (first one here), this one arguing against marijuana prohibition via the principles of self-ownership and personal autonomy. Lyrical excerpt below:
Why be sad when happiness can be bought for a little more then free
Modern day prohibition
Are we men? Are we children?
At what age can I choose how to [...]

The human condition through the lens of political pandering

Hardly timely but since I (strive to) blog about all things relating to personal autonomy…I want to cite the following article from the mid-April edition of the Economist. The context is political pandering, which all too often has the effect of replacing the concept of rational human beings with the concept of ‘the masses’, or-to [...]

Nietzsche loves a dance party: “Know it all”

Remember the punk/ska movement of the late ’90s? I was in high school and it was a pretty big deal. Definitely the trendiest music-wave I’ve ever lived through and I, yes, I embraced it…with blind, groundless elitism.
An odd psychology, indeed…one that celebrated its underground quality, its exclusiveness, in a totally ostentatious manner. I mean, I [...]

Rando Thursday Whatever: a Missouri bong, probably unionized

Welcome to my inaugural “Rando Thursday Whatever”, a…well…random, outpouring of whatever stories and snippets—of a more apolitical and non-ideological stripe—I find worthy of mention. Yes, get excited for word vomit on a weekly basis!
Firstly, I’m not sure if I made it explicit in my last post, but I was in St. Louis, Missouri all last [...]

Dear sole institution that holds a legal monopoly on the use of force

The Most Ridiculous Statement of March

Whew. For a second there, there almost wasn’t going to be a ‘most ridiculous statement’ for the month of March. But, then, Free Liberal put up the following video interview with Senator Harry Reid. It’s amazing. Amazing!

Our Senate Majority Leader stresses repeatedly that taxation is voluntary.
“Well, I don’t accept your phraseology. I don’t think we [...]

Dr. Kevorkian runs for Congress

Less than a year after being released from prison, Dr. Jack Kevorkian is running for Congress in Michigan’s 9th District as an independent.

If elected, the right-to-die advocate will (predictably) focus on changing the Ninth Amendment to allow for assisted-suicide; he has also expressed opposition to the U.S. war in Iraq. I’m ignorant to the rest [...]

The highest ATM fee I’ve ever seen (and accepted)

For those of you who didn’t know, I’m living in Houston now. Tonight will be two weeks. Woo-wee, Texas!
Anyhow, over the weekend, my roommate and I drove a couple hours to Austin to go to a few bars and check out the atmosphere of SXSW. I wasn’t really interested in any of the bands [...]

That which we’re fighting

Great visual representation of paternalism, of the state making sure the individual tows-the-line.
I would love to find something in the same artistic style but expressing the opposite message, a rejection of government paternalism for personal autonomy.
It would make a sweet tee-shirt.

“MY PLACE. MY CHOICE. SMOKING ALLOWED.”

Jon Hemminghaus, from Williamson County in southern Illinois, posted an anti-smoking ban sign in front of his business, Wounded Rig Inc., about a month ago. It reads:

Wham. Bam. Boom. A cogent 6-word argument for property rights and self-ownership. Bad ass.
It is Jon’s property and therefore John’s right to determine what activities are performed on his [...]
