On Repeat: London Telecommunicating

Nov 7, 2008

Listening to Pandora the other day, I came across London Telecommunicating by The Polish Ambassador. No vocals, the style provides the perfect working vibe. Mellow and yet still, interestingly enough, very much a jam. YouTube:

I was so impressed I download the whole album, entitled Diplomatic Immunity. My overall reaction is something like a thoughtful “whoa”, if that makes any sense. Definitely doesn’t disappoint. Other jams include Mechanical Lumberjack and Oxygenating Mars.

Nic: You and I are really just solidifying our relationship so maybe I shouldn’t take this sort of risk, but…what is so groovy and jamlike about this song? Is this what all the kids are listening to these days? (I stopped at 1:32 because I became convinced I would die of boredom before the end.) With blogaffection and real quizzical-ness… E!?

Aw – c’mon, E!! This is good stuff! Now bear in mind that I have 22 synthesizers in my studio, so I kinda like this type of thing. This guy has clearly listened to a LOT of Kraftwerk in his time, and these three cuts remind me a lot of the solo work of Gregg Hawkes, the keyboard player from The Cars. These are some big PHAT analog synths, and the grooves really are good. Nice pick, Nick!
